Learning for a Change: exploring the relationship between education and sustainable development
How do you bridge the divide between educating for a specific purpose and education for its own sake…?There are few who would argue against Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and it’s certainly climbing the political agenda. But are we clear about what we mean when we call for ‘more’ or ‘better’ learning for sustainability? Is ESD really ‘education’ in the liberal tradition or a training of minds to conform to a green imperative? Our paper, by Paul Vare of Learning South West and Bill Scott of Bath University, outlines two complementary versions of ESD. We would be interested to know whether you find this distinction helpful or does it muddy the waters still further? How do you bridge the divide between educating ‘for’ something (vocational or otherwise) and education for its own sake? Please register here and join the discussion, we’d love to hear from you…
