World Skills - We are one of the partners coordinating the Have a Go campaign

World Skills London 2011 which took place from 5th-8th October is the world’s largest skills competition and celebrates many talents - from car maintenance to hairdressing to landscape gardening. Part of the World Skills initiative, the ‘Have a Go’ campaign will allow people to gain hands-on experience in a new activity at any time between now and February 2012 and hopefully be inspired to find out more about learning.
In this region Learning South West is one of the partners coordinating the campaign. Our ‘Have a Go’s’ will be targeted at adults and encouraging them to get involved in informal or vocational learning.
We would like to identify as many examples as possible of where groups of people come together (not necessarily for learning) where they could be encouraged to try a new activity. We are looking at exhibitions and events that are already take place as well as locations like shopping centres, visitor attractions etc.
We are also looking for people with skills they would like to share. These must be short ‘bite-sized’ activities that can be undertaken in a few minutes and with limited resources. Here are just some of the ideas that we are considering:
• How to set up a Twitter feed
• Knot tying
• Maths challenge
• Baton twirling
• What does this button on my mobile phone do?
• First aid related activities
• Online shopping
• Safe spider disposal
It can be anything that engages people!
If you have an event at which you think people would like to ‘have a go’, a skill that you would like to share or a learning opportunity to promote, please contact Hayley Broom on 01823 365435 or hayley_broom@learning-southwest.org.uk for details of the support available.
