YOUNG CHARITY TRUSTEES Young Charity Trustees (YCT) exists to try to increase the number of young people becoming Trustees and to support those who already are. According to Charity Commission data, while 18-24 year olds represent 12% of the total adult population they make up just 0.5% of trustees.Becoming a charity trustee offers many benefits. Young people will learn how organisations are run and gain experience in areas such as setting strategic goals, accounting, financial planning and employment practice. Such experience would enhance any CV and give young trustees an edge over other jobseekers in an interview situation.For more information please click here

CHARITY COMMISSION - CIO GUIDANCE AND CONSTITUTIONS has been published to enable charities, advisers and anyone else interested in setting up a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) to decide if the CIO structure is the right one for them, and to familiarise themselves with the guidance and constitutions ahead of the expected implementation .
YOUNG PEOPLE'S INVOLVEMENT IN GOVERNANCE - The British Youth Council (BYC) has recently revised and updated four guide booklets as part of their Youth at the Table training programme, which aims to support young people's involvement in governance. The booklets are designed to help develop the skills of young people in order for them to become effective members of a committee or a charity trustee board. Click here to access the guides. GOOD GOVERNANCE: A CODE FOR THE VOLUNTARY AND COMMUNITY SECTOR – the second edition of this NCVO guide sets out best practice for governing a voluntary or community organisation and builds on the original version from 2005, and should be clearer with less jargon. It is based on six key principles describing how an effective board provides good governance and leadership:
• understanding their role;
• ensuring delivery of organisational purpose;
• working effectively both as individuals and a team;
• exercising effective control;
• behaving with integrity;
• being open and accountable.

NEW COMPACT PUBLISHED The refreshed national Compact signed by Gordon Brown on behalf of the Government and Simon Blake on behalf of The Third Sector was published on 16th December following a period of consultion on a draft document which ran from 20th July to 12th October. The refreshed Compact comes as two seperate documents; An Introduction to the Compact which deals with: what the Compact is, who does the Compact apply to, guidance for implementation and resolving differences; and The Compact which deals with policy development, allocating resources and advancing equality.
