Making Youth Work Work: A Toolkit - Section 8
SECTION 8 - Effective management and leadership
Many youth workers are exceptionally entrepreneurial, and have great ideas for how to create exciting environments and opportunities for young people. Good managers and leaders make sure there is space for workers and young people to implement their ideas, within a secure framework.
The OFSTED Framework for Inspection of Youth Services contained criteria for leadership and management, which continue to provide a good basis today, despite changes in the structure of delivery. The National Youth Agency has produced a Self Assessment Toolkit for Integrated Youth Support Services with a helpful section on leadership and management.
Ford Partnership Management (fpm) have a strong track record in providing management and leadership training for those in the youth sector, at different levels from front-line managers to Heads of Services and Chief Executives of voluntary youth organisations.
In the spirit of ‘doing more with less’, youth work organisations need to be adept at working in partnership with others. This will include other public sector and voluntary organisations, arts and sports organisations, local communities and private sector organisations who may be able to assist with new ways of funding and delivering aspects of youth work.
