Regional Overview

In July 05, questionnaires on recorded outcomes were sent out to members of the SW Accreditation network and the SW voluntary youth work network, to try to establish the extent of recorded outcomes across the region. 22 responses were received – 11 from statutory youth services and 11 from voluntary youth organizations.

Methods of recording: The most common methods of recorded outcomes were local certificates. Less frequently used were profile of achievement for young people, recorded outcomes sheets and individual learning plans. Several youth work projects noted that they used accredited outcomes, eg YAA certificates of OCN credits, to indicate the achievement of a recorded outcome as well.

Standardised systems: Respondents were asked if they were using a standardised system across all units to record outcomes. 6 respondents are using a system (see section 5 for examples) and 6 are working towards a system. These included one linking session evaluation sheets to a recorded outcomes register and in time individual profiles for young people; power maps and a database. 10 respondents had no standard system.

Co-ordinating figures: The majority of respondents either use a paper based system or no system at all for collating the numbers of recorded outcomes. Other ways of co-ordinating the figures were via Youth Base or another IT database.

Training: The majority of those responding to the questionnaire indicated that they felt that there was a need for their staff to receive further training on recorded outcomes. This is something that the SW Regional Youth Work Unit hopes to provide in 2005/6.

Performance indicators: Of the statutory youth services that responded to the questionnaire, two services indicated that it was not possible to estimate whether they would meet the performance indicator on recorded outcomes. Four services said they would achieve 50-75%, three would achieve 75-100% and two would achieve 25-50% of the target.
